New year's resolution: NOT to make a new year's resolution
2018 is here. Minions relate it to new beginnings. Well not really. It's still us, ain't it? It's still you. It's still me. It's still this old tired world turning sluggishly around, and us minions trying to keep up with it.
We always wish for more "blessings". But blessings there won't be if we don't work for it. We can't combine idleness and prayers and expect to be showered with blessings. Either we're extremely lucky and landed on unexpected inheritance, or we're cunning, aside from being hardworking.
Why do we minions come up with new year's resolutions anyway? Is it because of our guilt feelings for the excesses we have commited the past year? Or the lack of activity on our part to do something meaningful? If a minion practices moderation all year round, would there be a need for a new year's resolution to be established at the beginning of the year?
I think I qualify to not make a new year's resolution as I have practiced moderation in many aspects of my life. To create one would be to do the opposite of what I am doing now, which would be living in excess.
I am a supporter of the idea of living within one's means. I guess the balance of supply and demand appeals a lot to me... both on small and large scale. It goes without saying that one ought to spend only what one can AFFORD. Overspending will always lead to sleepless nights and a restful night is a commodity I cannot afford to give up.
Constant accumulation of material things can drastically turn a minion's life upside-down. It makes me think of hamsters that store food inside their mouths as they eat. Life would revolve around those things that are crammed around a minion's nest, leaving very little space to actually move around, making one a hostage of one's own stuff. That would be a nightmarishly claustrophobic situation all around.
If being able to afford comfort creates freedom, abuse of it creates a prison. Being overly attached to objects can mean emprisonment to the fear that one might lose them, and thus proceeds to stay with these objects to protect them from being taken away. When this happens, comfort turns to discomfort. And that sense of freedom is cancelled out.
So away with new year's resolution. Just do away with excesses. And that doesn't have to start on new year's eve. We can start tomorrow, or today, or in the next hour, or better yet, right now.
