Minimalism 2018
In this era of excesses, of over the top trends, of exaggerated social media reactions, of extreme hoarding, of outrageous characters as world leaders, restraint has become even more relevant than ever before.
The need to be seen and heard, the need to belong somewhere in this realm contradict the need for restraint. The craving for attention is so much stronger than the desire to lie-low.
This situation is reflected in the arts, too. To impress is to shock. To shock is to create atrocious work.
Knowing when to stop is the key to restraint. Constant self-editing, culling, cleaning... these require patience and discipline. The result will astound you, for then you would have become self-critical and as a result, self-aware of how far you can push yourself. Your work will show maturity. And it will translate to the right audience.
