Self-modification at this time and age

Social media has opened up an accessible platform to display our narcissistic side. We recreate ourselves into our "ideal" selves. We not only clean up our blemishes by using face apps but jazz up our lifestyles by staging "falselfies".

Admittedly, it is a cheaper and less painful way of self-modification. We don't need to go to beauty specialists for make-up, nor a surgeon to iron out wrinkles or pump up breasts. Self-modification is now achievable using only our fingertips. And with the Covid restrictions, the chances of people seeing you in person for comparison is minimal.

So we go for the extremes. Blue-green eyes? No problem. Pink hair? Sure! Long legs? Why not? Narrow jaws? Hell yes!

And on and on we go... to the point where we can no longer recognize ourselves or other people we intimately know.

This cleaned-up versions of ourselves are just that, versions. If we could actually try to emulate that "ideal" self in real life, live the "healthy" lifestyle we display, truly walk those miles of the panoramas we claim we've been, actually practice the sayings we post and really reconnect with long-lost friends on messenger, then maybe we could balance the narcissism out with a little bit of reality and empathy.
