Is conformity passè?
conformity
/kənˈfɔːmɪti/
noun
- compliance with standards, rules, or laws orbehaviour in accordance with socially accepted conventions.
It used to be that conforming to societal norms and expectations was an admirable trait. In our modern society, the norm has turned inside out and upside down. To be different has become the new "to be". But to most of us who are quite mediocre in terms of looks and talents, that is a tough act to follow.
It used to be that the creative population had the monopoly of being different and rebellious. Not anymore. Anybody can act "difficult and unreasonable" without the proverbial excuse of artistic eccentricity.
When you see a weird persona walking down the street, it is not likely that that person is an artist of some form.
Being different and weird has now become a lifestyle choice, where before, practitioners of it just could not help themselves but be it.
Maybe it is a good thing, as the real weird ones have become more accepted as normal. The tricky part, though is in the accurate identification of the genuine weirdos. But what am I worried about? Real weirdos will always be that, truly weird. The pretenders will still be spotted when pushed to the limits.
